All about National Education Policy ,2020

 

Education is a fundamental right for every child.

In the Third Part of the Indian Constitution,  Articles from 12 to 35 grant important fundamental rights to Indian citizens. 

With the aim of education to all, Article 21 A was added by 86th amendment in the Indian Constitution. According to this article, the state shall provide free and compulsory education to children between 6 and 14 years of age. 

๐ŸŽฏ National Education Policy:

This policy is formulated by the Government of India to promote and regulate the education system.


๐ŸŽฏ Three Policies after Independence: 

The first National Policy on Education in 1968 was based on the report and recommendations of the Kothari Commission(1964-1966). This policy was promulgated by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It laid stress on 10+2+3  structure.

The second National Policy on Education in 1986 was set up under the chairmanship of Acharya Ramamurthi. It was revised/modified in 1992. This policy was promulgated by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi

The third National Education Policy (NEP 2020)  is a replacement of the 1986 policy. It was launched on July 29, 2020. This policy was promulgated by the then Prime Minister Narendra  Modi. This policy is a comprehensive framework for elementary education to higher education in both rural and urban India.

This policy was submitted by a panel led by Krihnaswamy Kasturirangan, former ISRO chief. NEP 2020 is based on four pillars which are access, equity, quality and accountability. 


๐ŸŽฏ Key Points of NEP 2020 :

1. NEP 2020 lays emphasis on 5+3+3+4 (3 years of pre-school + 12 years of school )  structure. Here, the old 10+2 structure of NPE 1986 is being replaced. 

2 . Foundation Stage (3 to 8 years): Children in the first three years will receive pre-school education in Anganwadi. The next two years, children will be taught in Ist and 2nd classes in school

3. Mother tongue will be a medium of Instruction till 5th grade. Activity- based learning is to be focused.

4.  Preparatory Stage ( 8 to 11 years ;  Classes- 3 to 5) : The focus of study will be on speaking,  reading, writing, physical education, language, art, science and mathematics. 

5. Middle Stage (11 to 14 years; classes 6 to 8) : It will introduce students to the more abstract concepts in subjects of mathematics science, social science, arts and humanities.

6. Secondary Stage ( 14 to 19 years; classes 9 to 12) : Classes 9 and 10  will cover the first phase and classes 11 and 12 will cover the second phase. Critical thinking will be developed in this stage. Multiple options of subjects will be provided.  No steam education will be there. 

7. NEP 2020 is child- centred. It would ensure that all children avail golden opportunities to learn and to achieve success irrespective of their birth and  background . 

8. It also aims to help students to develop scientific temper from a young age.

9. It will start vocational education as well as coding from class 6.

10. Midday Meal Scheme will be extended to include breakfasts. 

11. Higher Education: 

 Bachelor's Degree will be of 3 or 4 years with multiple exit options. 


๐ŸŽฏ What will the students get after completing a year in graduation?

A student, in case, leaves his study after one year , he will be awarded a certificate. He will receive a diploma after 2nd and a degree after 3rd year. However,  4th year is optional. 


Ist year : Certificate 

2nd year : Diploma 

3rd year : Degree

4th year: Multidisciplinary Bachelor's Degree  (optional)


12. Sanskrit is proposed to be added in IIT.

13. No M.Phil . Direct admission in Ph.D.


๐ŸŽฏ Key notes: 

● NEP 2020 will be implemented from the academic year 2022-23.

● The Human Resource Ministry is renamed as the Ministry of Education. 

● The Education Minister of India is Shri Dharmendra Pradhan.

● The education budget, 2022  has increased by 11. 86%  from previous year.

● No academic exams every year. Students will attend three exams, in classes 2, 5 and 8.

● Semester system is being introduced in board classes. The re-designed structure can be based on the Objective and Subjective exam pattern.

● NCERT is preparing the new National Curriculum Framework.
